Sports Dentistry Prevention & Treatment

sports dentistry

Since a lot of people play sports, it’s super important to protect your teeth from sport related injuries that include oral diseases, teeth, mouth, jaw and face of all ages. Injuries that include the mouth and teeth are mostly common among athletes. It’s very important to protect your child’s smile especially for health reasons and aesthetics.

Common Dental Injuries in Sports

Tooth knocked out:

When injuries occur in sports, the tooth may get knocked out. Please come back to the dentist as soon as possible because time is the most important factor when trying re-implant the tooth. Please don’t re-implant the tooth yourself, some damage may occur. The best way to transport the tooth in is cold milk. If cold milk is not nearby, you can use saliva, saline and even water. Do not let the tooth dry out and don’t wrap it with anything. Lastly, don’t touch the tooth root.

Tooth chipped/cracked:

When a tooth is chipped or cracked, an x-ray will be necessary to determine the treatment needed for the tooth. Schedule an emergency visit with your dentist as soon as possible. If the chip or the crack of the tooth isn’t severe, some filling or bonding agent can fix the problem. However, if the crack or chip is affecting the nerve of the tooth, a more complicated treatment might be necessary.

Tooth displaced:

If you suspect a tooth within your child mouth is out of placement, schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. It’s recommended to not move the tooth back on your own. Lastly, try to apply ice to any discomfort before heading to the dentist.
